Travelling France » Travel Europe France » best driving guide book for Europe ?

Question:

Hi   I plan to do a big road trip in Western Europe , including Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy , Spain and Portugal.  So far I have narrowed my search to Frommer’s  two books ( "Greatest driving tours" and "Most loved driving driving tours")  . Is there something better ?   Any experience with these books ? Luke M.

If you’re planning on doing that in a week or 10 days Europe-wide books may be okay. Most publishers, though, have an idea of the size a book ought to be … 200 pages, 300 pages, whatever. No matter how much subject matter is covered the book will more or less end up being the same size. Books focused on a country, or limited area, will have more information than a book covering a wider area.  To be inclusive all countries are more or less equally  represented.  Often at the cost of leaving out delightful destinations or routes in a country particularly rich in travel opportunity in order to include a ‘representative’, but less interesting, selections from another country. Better to buy several for a trip like that, not just one. For Switzerland, "Daytrips Switzerland: 45 One day Adventures by Rail, Bus and Car…", Renouf, Hastings House, ISBN: 0803894147 will be out in May. You can order from Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0803894147/travelwithedandjA/ Also the Michelin green series typically has excellent driving routes; descriptions of most sights include ‘how to get there by car’ info. The info in the Switzerland edition is particularly good. If you use a series like that the star rankings of individual sights are more or less comparable across countries so you can get a better feel for what you may want to include in your itinerary. The Swiss edition is at Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=2061563031/travelwithedandjA/ Ed — The non-commercial web … at its best: http://TWEnJ.com Trip Planning: Tips, Tools and Resources Rome .
