Travelling France » Travel France » Mont Blanc Tunnel Open? Italy to France
Question:
Another route is to travel from Switzerland over the Great St Bernards Pass, there is a tunnel that buses and most cars go through or if you have a car you can go right over the top and visit the monastery. This route is not too far off the route you had planned and you could travel on a train from Geneva to Chamonix, where the Mt Blanc tunnel starts, it’s worth a visit to see Chamonix. The 30 miles each side of Chamonix is by a special scenic train and the train terminus in Switzerland is not too far from where the Gt St Bernards pass starts. Enjoy your trip. Regards, Dan in Port Glasgow.
Response:
Sorry, I had the route in reverse. At Aosta in Italy, take the road across the St Bernards pass and then down into Switzerland at Martigny. From there you can take the scenic train via Chamonix into France and then on to Geneva. There is a regular bus service from Aosta to Martigny and beyond. Regards, Dan.

I hear that the ferry service is fairly reliable… Bob — Never allow anybody who wants to be a leader to lead
Response:
The tunnel is closed due to the terrible fire accident with many deaths occurred two years ago . It will be opened again at the beginning of next year. The alternative route is crossing the south frontier ( a good chance to visit the Italian and French riviera ), or to cross the Swiss-Italian border or the Italian-French border at the Monginevra’s pass west of Torino. During winter time, due to bad road conditions( snow ) you better take the south coast choice. The tunnel is closed after a disastrous fire; as long as I know, rebuilding works still have to begin, so I guess it will stay closed for at least one or two years. Home page: http://www.angelfire.com/ar/archivarius (musicologia pratica)
